Melville Cottage is lovely, neat, sunny and close to the beach in Gorran Haven. Just what you need for an uncomplicted sandy holiday. This cottage has been brilliantly modernised keeping the traditional proportions, but adding a double storey living space with dining area and balcony to bedrooms. In front there's a small walled yard with room for bbq and/or keeping your inflatable boat…
Two bedrooms (king and triple bunk), bathroom, livingroom/kitchen/diningroom, courtyard. Wifi, dishwasher, 100 metres to beach.
Melville Cottage is very conveniently placed just up Rattle Street (tiny pedestrian cobbled lane). From the front door to the sand is 100 paces unless you go into the bakers on the way.
The front door opens into the living space which is the whole of the ground floor. In the old days this was three tiny cosy rooms and the present design has retained the original beams and general dimensions, but by removing the partition walls there's a much more useful space for modern living. Tiled flooring with rugs.
Kitchen area with fitted units, fitted grill oven, glass topped electric hob. Fridge freezer. Microwave, toaster etc. Two windows onto Rattle Street.
The sitting room area has fireplace (not functioning) with sofa and armchairs. Window onto Rattle Street.
The front section is the clever new part, a double height room with dining table and stairs to original landing and bedrooms.
Four windows to the roof and front wall face south and fill the cottage with light. Over looking the courtyard and from the landing the hillside and cliff.
Sea green fitted carpet and original staircase and bedroom layout.
Main bedroom with kingsize bed and window onto Rattle Street.
Bedroom two with very solid pine bunk bed. Lower bunk is double and top bunk is single. Window looks across Rattle Street to the allotments.
Bathroom with blue bathroom suite, WC, pedestal sink and bath with electric shower over. Window onto Rattle St.
In front of the cottage a waist high wall surrounds a slate courtyard (aprox 2x4 mtrs) with quiet aspect. A nice sunny place to sit out or cook or keep very sandy things. There's an outdoor tap for rinsing feet etc. Rattle Street is pedestrian only, being quite narrow. It leads onto the main street which ends on the beach. Front door to beach took me 100 steps. The pasty shop is just around the corner.
The cottage is in the old part of Gorran Haven. It was the home of a fisherman and is well placed for quick checks on the sea. Or for nipping back home to fetch things from beach.
It is possible to stop and unload luggage within 15 metres of the cottage at entrance of Rattle Street. Then the best place to leave your car is the village car park, about 100 metres away on Canton. Parking on the street nearby is possible but has restrictions 8am to 6pm April to Sept.

DIRECTIONS & INFO
Rattle Street, Gorran Haven, St Austell, Cornwall, PL26 6JG
First, get to St Austell, then… From the A390 in St. Austell (A390 is main Truro-Liskeard road) take the B3273 to Mevagissey (at the ‘B&Q’ / Mac Donald’s roundabout).
After one mile is the small village of London Apprentice; a further mile, the village of Pentewan. At Pentewan the B3273 ascends a long winding hill overlooking the sea on the left. Turn right at the cross-roads at the apex of the hill, following signs to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Gorran Haven. (The alternative route to Gorran Haven, through Mevagissey is not recommended in Summer as there are often lengthy traffic queues in the narrow streets).
You will pass Heligan after crossing a narrow bridge and negotiating a sharp left hand bend. Follow the road for about four miles to Gorran churchtown – church is on the left – down and up a dip and around another sharpish left hand turn. A couple of hundred yards along is the right hand turn to Gorran Haven (sign-posted).
The road into Gorran Haven descends a long hill winding through the village, the road getting narrower and narrower. Past the car park field on the left, keep going straight on (towards the sea). You will see Cakebread’s bakery and shop on your left and red phone box on your right. Opposite the phone box is the entrance to Rattle Street, a narrow cobbled lane (pedestrian only) and Melville Cottage is the second cottage up (on right). It has a white wall around small courtyard.
From the turn on to the B3273 in St. Austell to Gorran Haven should take about 25 minutes.
Unloading & Parking:
There is no parking at Melville Cottage (the village was here before cars were invented), but you can usually park to unload on the street outside. You can park long term in the village car park 100 yards away. It's possible to get a weekly ticket for about £25 in season.
Keys are in the keysafe by the front door. We confirm the keycode before your arrival.
