Mermaid Cottage is ideal for a beach based holiday - it is right next to the beach, almost on it.

A large 3 bedroom cottage, sleeping 6, it has an en-suite master bedroom occupying the whole top floor with fantastic sea views (unsurprisingly, since the sea is usually within 30 feet of the room). The living room with kitchen and dining table, plus separate games room, occupy the whole ground floor. In between on the first floor there is a twin bedroom, double bedroom & shower room. All floors are connected by two spiral staircases. The beach is just outside the front door.

The cottage is located in the oldest part of the village, on a quiet, single-lane street, about 5 metres from the beach. The front door is up four steep steps and takes you onto the first floor. Next door is the beachside “Mermaid Cafe” which provides tea, coffee and ice cream. This is closed after tea time so does not cause any noise at night.

First Floor:

The first floor has a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. The double bedroom has a white sleigh bed with matching chest of draws and a wardrobe. The room has dual aspect windows looking out over the beach and sea while the other (with window seat) overlooks a quiet street. The twin room also has dual aspect windows, one of which also shares the sea view.

There is a newly fitted family shower room with toilet connecting off of the main hallway on the first floor.

Ground Floor:

The ground floor is accessed via an iron spiral staircase which takes you down into a very large open plan living area with kitchen, dining and lounge areas. Beyond this there is a utility and a games rom. The floor is terracotta tiled throughout with rugs.

At the beachside end a large window looks onto the beach slipway entrance and sandy beach and quay beyond. The lounge area has two sofas and an armchair. There is a 36 inch flat screen TV with a DVD player.

The centre of the room has a fireplace and mantle with a log burner. There is a pine dining table seating 8 in the central space and beyond this a newly-fitted shaker-style kitchen, with a ceramic hob, fitted oven and a microwave, butlers sink and cabinets.

Utility room

Beyond the kitchen, there is a utility room with sink and drainer, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and fridge freezer.

Games Room

Beyond the utility room, there is a games room with ping pong table and table football. A side window looks onto the platform above the beach known as 'the Plat'.

Back Upstairs:

The top floor is reached up a second steep spiral staircase from the entrance hallway.

Master bedroom & en suite bathroom occupies the whole top floor of the house. There’s a king size bed and a sitting area with sofa, armchair and coffee table. There is also TV & DVD player here. This bedroom has three original sash windows that look straight out to sea over the beach. The floor is pine boards with rugs.

The large en-suite bathroom has an original free-standing enamel bathtub, toilet with high level cistern and pedestal basin. A window overlooks the street below.

Unloading & Parking:

As with most fishermen's cottages in the village there is no parking. However, bags can be unloaded by stopping outside the front door on arrival. The village car park about 200ms away and is payable separately (currently £24 per week)

  • If required there is a single camp bed available (this is by arrangement & at extra charge of £30).
  • The house has central-heating transmitted through old cast iron radiators.
  • Baby gates are fitted on all staircases.

  • Outside space:

The area immediately outside the window of Mermaid cottage, belongs to the cottage and the window sill is a pleasant place to sit and enjoy the world passing by. The Mermaid Beach Cafe conveniently nextdoor, serves a variety of refreshments until early evening.

    A little more info:

Mermaid Cottage is a historic building – it has a story and is very much in the heart of the village.

In the 18th century it was the village pub, ‘The Ship’ and from its windows Dickie Kingcup, the famous local smuggler looked out across the bay and organized drops of brandy casks off Dodman point, while the coastguard men sat in the Watchhouse further along the beach and wondered what the fishermen were doing. You’ve seen Poldark, think costumes and intrigue.

The cottage has a really magical atmosphere, especially in the quieter autumn and winter seasons when the winter storms can come to lash against the windows. In all season you can hear the sound of the waves as you lie in bed.

As with most of our cottages, its location lends itself to a great variety of activities, from rock-pooling and coast path hiking to visiting our impressive local attractions. Visit our Area and Activities pages to learn more.

    So handy for the beach

Lovely cottage. Great master bedroom - what a view! Very spacious, so handy to the beach. Would be a good idea to have a kettle in upstairs bedroom to make a cup of tea while admiring the view!
