Stonesthrow Cottage, Canton, Gorran Haven

Oh you must see this one. Lovely two bedroom cottage very close to the beach at Gorran Haven. With nice, walled slate courtyard by the front door. Inside seems to have been inspired by Greece. White washed walls, soft green woodwork. Simple but very satisfying.

Stonesthrow Cottage is on the main street in Gorran Haven which ends on the beach. It is a very old building, a fixture of village life. It has been really beautifully made current, so that it is still very much the old cottage except that the kitchen and bathrooms are practical. Overlall the house is still of earlier times, except I'm sure very much more comfy than in former times. It is full of small attractive touches - bright striped cushions in the windows and framed photos of the old village and beach.

Cottage Layout

A small gate leads through the low wall of the courtyard. From here you can see the sea, the entrance to the beach is 110 metres away.

The front door opens onto a small hallway with useful cupboard and stairs up.

To the left, the kitchen with window seat and dining table seating 4. Range of fitted units with electric ceramic hob, oven, microwave. There is a dishwasher. The old fireplace is now a storage space, but you can imagine where a Cornish range once was.

Doorway from kitchen leads to a short corridor with aa window onrto the courtyard. Here is a washing machine and drying racks.

The family bathroom has bath with shower over. WC and basin.

The sittingroom is to the right of the entrance hall. The main fireplace wall is whitewashed and there is a log burner. The A large corner sofa takes up two walls and faces the tv and dvd. The small casement window onto the courtyard has another pleasant window seat.

Stairs with seagrass matting lead up to landing - nice original bannisters etc.

In the centre between the two bedrooms is a good sized toilet with basin.

To the left (seaward side) double bedroom with attractive metal bedstead. Window seat, wardrobe and chest of drawers. Flooring is seagrass. The window with window seat overlooks front of house.

The twin bedroom has two 3 foot wooden framed beds. The tiny original fireplace alcove is preserved (no grate) and also behind one of the headboards, almost hidden, a charming tiny cupboard in the wall, which is Ideal for hiding treasures. Casement window with window seat onto front.

The Outside and Beach access

The wall of the courtyard is about 3ft tall, high enough to enclose small (supervised) children while you sit in this sunny slate lined outdoor space. Stonestrow is in the very centre of the village and the main street leading to the beach passes by in a cheerful fashion. With umbrella and dining table set out you are about as near to the beach as you can be.

Beach Access

Location

Gorran Haven is a cheerful and friendly small village half way down the south coast of Cornwall. It is very much appreciated for its two sandy beaches and small harbour with quay. In summer the beaches team with families enjoying the sea, stream and rock pools.

There is a single main shop - Cakebread's - which is open all year and is the mainstay of the village being the bakers, grocery, off licence, newsagent and post office and run by the ever smiling Barbara Noott. Great pasties.

In season there are several other shops: a fish and chip shop and a beach cafe, a small cafe restaurant and soon the newly refurbished Llawnroc hotel and bar. In Gorran Churchtown- a mile inland- the Barley Sheaf pub has a pleasant garden, comfy bar and home cooked meals as well as pasties and pints of good local St Austell ales.
