Farm Cottage, Portloe

Large detached house in the middle of tiny Portloe. Just lovely with painting, and charm. Plenty of space and very attractive setting less than 100 metres from the sea. This should really be called Farm 'House' because it was once the main farm in the centre of (tiny) Portloe. The barn is now used as games room & boat house and the farmyard is paved over, but it retains a rather French country feel, with an enclosed courtyard outside and an attractive, arty interior. It is a pleasant, characterful house that invites relaxation, long meals and conversation.

The House is detached and has open space around it, but is tucked in amongst the small cottages in the valley leading to the attractive small harbour about 75 metres away.  The pub and the church are just up or down the road, respectively.

Layout

The driveway is a tight turn off the narrow street in the heart of the village. Through a gate, it is possible to park in front of the house or in the courtyard to the left.

The front door is reached up a short flight of steps to a small deck with a view down the valley to the harbour and sea between cliffs either side.

Entrance into a sunroom with a comfortable sofa, small television with free view and dvd player; Cupboard with games and toys, maps and walking sticks etc. Pleasant views and a good place to read. Tiled floor with rugs. Model ships.

Utility room with washing machine, ironing boards etc. Window onto courtyard below.

Hallway leads to a large sitting room with three sash windows, each framing a different view, of the sea and cliffs across gardens, the green undeveloped valley side behind the house and the courtyard. There is ample seating in comfortable, brightly upholstered sofas and armchairs, an open fireplace, many books and some bright and beautiful paintings.

French doors open to a good sized kitchen with an old oak dining table and chairs. Traditional white painted wooden kitchen cupboards. It has all the essential kitchen equipment including dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer, also a good ceramic topped cooker with double oven. There are plenty of pans, china, glasses and colourful large dishes. Two windows and a high ceiling with skylight make it bright and pleasant. A doorway leads back to the hallway.

Shower room off the hallway with good shower in cabinet, wc.

Stairs go down to bedrooms (it is an upside down house to take advantage of the views on top floor, but bedrooms are bright too). At the foot of the stairs an outside door leads to slate patio and courtyard.

The first bedroom is the twin bedroom with 3 foot divan beds, a chest of drawers and books. Two windows onto courtyard.

Further along the corridor, on the seaward side of the house, is the main bedroom with a double bed, large wardrobe, two windows looking across the quiet garden next door.

En suite shower room with good enclosed shower, wc.

Double bedroom with Edwardian bed, large wardrobe, two windows with peaceful views, the one to the side has the busy stream below it which meets the sea in the harbour.

Bunk bedroom with pine framed 3 foot bunk beds, window onto patio and courtyard.

Family bathroom with blue and white tiled walls, bath, basin & wc.

The Outside areas and beyond

The barn is set along one side of the large rectangular yard and is a lovely old building with wisteria growing up it. Inside, it is has old beams and a cobbled floor and there is ample space to put wet suits, canoes etc. There is also a second fridge freezer and a tumble dryer. It also contains various buckets and spades, outdoor furniture etc.

The courtyard is tarmac and it invites sun lounging (loungers & deck chairs in barn) or ball games.

Beside the house, at one end of the courtyard, there is a slate lined patio with a wooden dining table and chairs and a bbq built into the wall. Access to house through adjacent door.

From the house to the harbour and the cliff path is a two minute walk. The cliff scenery and walks in this area are wonderful and the pub serves good food. Pendower Beach is a short drive away. There is a rocky cove by the harbour suitable for looking for crabs and playing about with nets. Fishing from the rocks either side of the harbour.
