Family holidays...As I write, my young family is busy rampaging about the area, alongside all their school friends, just as I once did and it is pleasing to pass on information to other families who will enjoy it too.
With this in mind, a useful book 'Kid's Cornwall' was thought up by the Mums and Dads of children at Gorran school to raise funds for the school and related projects (see links).
The beach at Gorran Haven is very suitable for families with small children. It is not so large that you could lose sight of anyone easily and it has fine sand and a stream flowing down its centre (for damming up). Rocks to one side divide the main beach from the smaller beach of Little Perhaver and in amongst these rocks there are several intriguing rock pools. The rocks themselves are good for climbing (with supervision).
When the tide is in, many of the local kids jump off the end of the quay amid great jollity and splashing, and even if you don't feel tempted to join in, it is entertaining to watch. Kayaks and wetsuits can be hired on the beach and there are many hidden coves, and one large beach (Great Perhaver) nearby that can only be reached by sea.
Neighbouring beaches are more secluded and have fewer (or no), facilities and can be reached along the cliff path or by a short car journey along winding lanes. These are more suitable for older families.
There are lovely walks all about the area and some are pushchair friendly (see guide).
Mevagissey a small fishing port, 3 miles east, is much busier than Gorran Haven and has lots of interesting shops, (many especially good for children), restaurants and pubs as well as fishing trips and a ferry to Fowey.
